Apple visionOS

For 3 years, I was the sole researcher on a design prototyping team that explored mixed reality experiences for Apple's visionOS. In this time, our team contributed significantly to the design of system interactions and app UX.

About the project

Apple visionOS is Apple’s first spatial operating system, a blend of novel input technologies presented to the user in accessible and intuitive ways. The resulting experience took many informed iterations to achieve.

As the sole researcher on an experience prototyping team, I utilized a variety of research methods to inform and evaluate:

  1. Core interaction design (e.g., window & object movement, trackpad input handoff, text editing)
  2. 1st-party app concepts, experience prototypes, and usability

Project results

While visionOS is the result the hard work of many, including my tremendous design and engineering counterparts, my impact was demonstrated in the following ways:

  • As a member of a well-regarded experience prototyping team, the insights I shared were seen as an important part of the process to kickoff and guide the work of world-class design prototypers.
  • I received several patents for my contributions to the conceptual framework of novel interaction solutions
  • Multiple partner teams saw me as a helpful counterpart in identifying considerations early for further iteration and optimization
  • Many hands-on reviews of Vision Pro have directly commented on the intuitiveness of my core contributions:

"Moving around the windows . . . it's so easy and it works so well. So I was really surprised at the intuitiveness of it.” - Sara Dietschy

"Until I sat down, put the headset on, and actually experienced what it’s like to maneuver windows, to pinch and just bring a window closer to you. It was so incredibly intuitive, I am actually speechless.” - iJustine

"I look at a window, I select it and I push it back in space, and with incredible precision and responsiveness it moves it around the room exactly where I want it, any UI direction." - Marques Brownlee
